" 'Violet' [on Live Through This] was officially born on Halloween at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit opening for the Laughing Hyenas with 40 people there. And I was in the van outside the show during soundcheck, and we had five songs from Nevermind, and I was so jealous of those songs that I had to try and top them. I could not believe that somebody that I knew, from our underground, had written a batch of songs so fiercely great."

Courtney & Michael Stipe talk about the second Athens, GA show in 1991.
NME: When did you actually meet?
MS: "I remember Hole came through Athens, Georgia and played around the time of their first record..."
CL: "Yeah, and we didn't get invited to Peter Buck's house, which was always the sign. However, Michael did come to our show."
MS: "I was eating in a restaurant and these three people came up to me and introduced themselves. We started talking and they said, 'We're playing the 40 Watt Club tonight, come down if you want to' and I didn't think twice about it because they were really friendly people..."
CL: "And we looked cool!"
MS: "Yeah, they looked cool, the whole band, which is hard to do in Athens because everybody there looks cool. It's hard to stand out and have a different look and they look great. I proceeded then to get incredibly drunk...I don't know why, I don't know what was going on that night but I got really drunk and I stumbled down to the 40 Watt Club and there were about...I'm gonna do you a big favour here...there were about 15 people in the whole place and it's cavernous, huge. It's Tuesday night, y'know, students were studying, nobody had ever heard of this band before. And I stood there and I was completely blown away. And I think I told someone...I didn't reach you that night, did I? You were on the phone in the back room the whole time, chatting with Kurt."
CL: "So this is '91? This is the second time at the 40 Watt?"
MS: "Yeah. And I felt like I was watching The Cramps in '79. I had not seen a band like this in a long, long time. And then we were in Seattle making a record and Kris Novoselic and Shelley, his wife, threw a party and..."
CL: "...Me and Kurt came over."
MS: "You came really, really late and you had some flowers and his contact lenses were bothering him."
CL: "His contact lenses? Oh, I remember. He was trying to have brown eyes. He had this weird phase where he bought brown contact lenses because he didn't wanna be recognised, but they weren't working."
MS: "Anyway, that was the first time we really met although we didn't get to talk that much. We spent most of the time in the basement..."
CL: "...With the jukebox."

* According to local legend Kurt Cobain was refused free entry to this gig to see Courtney. He eventually paid the £3 ticket price to get in... It's also claimed that after the show he got down on one knee and proposed to Courtney, but this comes from questionable local sources.
* At one point Jill starts singing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and audience members start teasing Clove about Kurt.

SP: Let me clear up the Kurt Cobain story...Hole were playing a gig at TJ's. The whole band travelled down together except Courtney Love. The band arrived and sound checked without her. Courtney Love came down with her agent (Russell Worby) very late. We opened the doors and loads of people came in; Courtney walked in, followed by Russell and a bedraggled-looking guy behind her. I stopped the guy and said 'that's £3.50 please, mate' - and he said "don't you know who I am?" - I recognised him then as Kurt Cobain, and let him in. The reason Courtney was so late was that Russell's car had been involved in a head-on collision on Town Bridge (Newport). The car was a write-off and Courtney, Kurt and Russell were all very lucky to escape with their lives. The car they were in was a light blue Skoda!

CALIFORNIA . . . sun, smog, drugs, Baywatch, and now Hole. Courtney Love was not the California girl the Beach Boys had in mind. Love's headline-hogging combo are wreaking a terrible vengeance for the bimbo-bands of history. Performance-art, chaos and psychosis collide violently in their short but shattering performance.
Ms Love takes the stage . . . well, twice, for one thing, since Hole sauntered on, sauntered off again, then reappeared with the instruments they'd apparently forgotten. Ms Love shuffles to the microphone like a giant bruise, in a tacky dress and mess of blonde hair straight out of a Russ Meyer movie. She looks washed-out, ragged, finished before she's begun.
But the music starts her up. Amid the clash and groan of Hole's songs, which are always teetering on the edge of complete collapse, Love pouts, whispers and shrieks. 'I want to be the girl with the most cake,' she croaks.
The volume of the voice is startling. 'I WAS A TEENAGE WHORE!' she roars, daring you to defy it as she thrashes her defenseless guitar. Suicidal stage-divers backflip sensationally into the melee.
The musicians take no notice. Even when two huge bouncers plonk themselves oafishly in front of Love to try to drag one offender out of the front row, the music churns remorselessly on. Then Love dispenses gifts, a shower of white powder. 'It's crack,' she announces nonchalantly. 'Therapy's really good,' she adds.
It seems over before it's really begun. There's a last lingering image of Love bawling 'I want it now she said, NOW NOW NOW!' Then Hole are gone. But not forgotten.

Smashing Pumpkins was preceded by smashing guitars, courtesy of Hole. The tortured, transfixing L.A. groups pairing with the headliners should have made this a bill to remember, but the audience was primed for Pumpkin and didn't take to Courtney Love's howls of anguish.
Hole ended its set in a tantrum, as Love ordered the band to halt and hurled her guitar to the ground. Guitarist Eric Erlandson finished things off by demolishing his instrument with a few impressive swings. Frustrated Midwestern youth, meet frustrated California youth.
